How to add a strap to a bag

Our Monstera Zipper pouch has been very popular! It’s a favorite in our studio and I’ve seen so many version on social media.

We have multiple kits and if you want to be surprised, we also have a mystery kit.

This cute and versatile bag is a simple pouch with a square bottom and it can easily be modified into a crossbody bag by adding a strap.

I’ll show you 3 different ways you can add a strap to a bag.

  • Grommets
  • Side Connectors
  • Zipper Tab Connectors

We carry all the hardware and tools needed to add straps to a bag.

These pouches feature our custom printed vinyl.

How to add a strap using grommets

You’ll need:

I wouldn’t attach a chain to this style. If you want to use a chain, consider the other 2 options.

How to add straps using side connectors

You’ll need:

  • 2 pieces of vinyl 2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″
  • 2 – 3/4″ D-Rings
  • 6 – 9mm x 8mm rivets
  • Your strap choice (webbing, cork strap, vinyl strap, chain, etc)

Instructions

  • To add strength, you can fuse Decovil Light (2 1/2″ x 3/4″) at the center.
  • Draw a line in the middle of the vinyl pieces (3/4″ from the edge along the long side)
  • Use DST to fold edges of vinyl towards the center
  • Use a round punch tool to round the edges
  • Topstich around the vinyl pieces
  • Use the hand press machine with the hole puch die to make holes centered, 1/4″ form the edge
  • Thread a 3/4″ D-Ring through the vinyl and place it on the pouch side.
  • Mark the holes placement.
  • Use the hand press machine again to make the holes on the pouch. Make sure the lining is flat.
  • Secure pieces with rivets.

How to add straps on the zipper tabs

You’ll Need:

  • (4) 9mm x 8mm rivets
  • (2) 1/2″ D-Rings
  • (2) vinyl pieces 2″ x 1/2″
  • Your strap choice (webbing, cork strap, vinyl strap, chain, etc)

Instructions

  • Leave 3/4″ SA on both sides when attaching the zipper
  • Use zipper tabs on both ends of the zipper
  • After attaching the zipper, before closing the sides of the pouch, make holes on the zipper tabs (centered)
  • To add strength you can fuse Decovi Light (2″ x 1/2″) to the vinyl pieces.
  • Thread D-Rings through vinyl pieces
  • Stitch 1/4″ from the edge
  • Use the hand press machine with the hole puch die to make holes, centered, 1/2″ from the edge
  • Insert D-ring strap connectors through each side of zipper tabs
  • Secure with rivets

If you prefer a wristlet, follow the same instructions on just one of the side of the pouch.
